Are you suffering from back pain? You’re not alone. 8 out of every 10 people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, it’s the number one cause of days taken off work in the UK. And, if you’re suffering from back pain, you’ll be trying to fight it with pain relief and getting nowhere fast.

It doesn’t have to be like this and you don’t have to live through the pain. For centuries chiropractors have been treating back pain and caring for people’s spines and nervous systems. Here’s how it works…

Chiropractic works on the simple principle that good spinal alignment leads to improved health, performance and if you have back pain – less pain.

The presence of a spinal misalignment (we call them subluxations) can interfere with your body’s master controller, the nervous system. The nervous system controls and regulates every single cell in your body, hence interference to this important system can have a negative effect on health or performance. A chiropractor will correct these spinal subluxations and aim to improve your body function, reduce pain and improve health.

We don’t crack anything! You’ll be treated with a series of adjustments. This involves carefully directed and controlled pressure in a precise direction to a joint that’s not doing what it’s meant to. By adjusting it, it allows the spine to return to a balanced and flexible state.

The popping or cracking sound you hear is just like when you crack a knuckle. It indicates the joint has stretched apart and separated slightly which can cause a release of tiny gas bubbles in the joint.

There are five main types of back pain:

1. low back pain
2. back and leg pain – sciatica
3. hip, buttock pain
4. rib or mid back pain
5. neck pain

We can help treat all of these. Chiropractic care is also used to treat shoulder pain, help with tension headaches, improve posture, improve sporting performance and much, much more.

Your first visit will be a consultation with one of our chiropractors where they’ll take a full health history from you and see how any issues you’ve had previously could be affecting you. They’ll perform a small number of simple tests to get the information they need about how your spine and nervous system are functioning.

This will be followed up with a full report and their recommended treatment plan for you.

We don’t just want to treat your back pain; we want to help you prevent it. The best way to prevent back pain is to keep your body moving. The most common reason why we experience back pain is we have sedentary lives and don’t move, walk or exercise as much as our body was designed to. Everyone should be trying to walk for at least 30 minutes each day.

Sitting for the spine is like sugar for the teeth. If you do have to spend a long time seated, ensure you have regular breaks – even just getting up and moving around the office. If you are working on a computer or at a desk then take regular breaks and ensure you have a long walk before and after work.

Regular back exercises will also be a huge help, you can find some examples here – https://vimeo.com/198968621

If this is the case you’re probably asking yourself:

  • Should I call an ambulance?
  • Should I ice it or put a heat pack on it?
  • Should I rest or try and be active?
  • Should I get my GP involved?

If you do get into trouble and have an acute attack of back pain as a general rule, if the pain is severe and you can’t get out of bed, treat it like a sports injury and apply ice for 15 minutes to the affected area, once every hour. Stay away from heat as heat will only draw pain producing chemicals to the area and make things worse.

If this has no impact then call us and we’ll advise you on what you need to do.

This varies from individual to individual, and depends on factors such as the length of time the problem has been present, the motivation to get well, the ability to carry out home care instructions (exercises, stretches, etc).
