FAQs

The body is controlled by the central nervous system and the central nervous system is housed in the spine. This system is the communication network between our brains and our bodies. Any disruption in this network is going to have an effect on the how our internal communication system performs.

When this system is blocked, we’re going to be hindering our body’s ability to function properly. This means we’ll heal slower, we’ll move less freely and when it comes to the brain we could quite possibly be living our day-to-day lives in a fog we didn’t even know was there.

The nervous system controls every function in every organ of our bodies. This list runs into the thousands but as a starter this would include digestion, attention, balance, posture, breathing, heart rate, hormone production and immune response. The better the brain and the nervous system can function, the better the body will function.

Chiropractic ensures that, through regular adjustments, this communication system is not just operating without blockages but improving all the time. When this is coupled with a lifestyle that includes regular exercise, good nutrition and a healthy dose of mindfulness, the effect is profound.

The first step is to take a full history of your complaint to asses your overall general health. For the second step, the chiropractor will conduct an orthopaedic and neurological examination including full range of motion and flexibility testing, finished off with a chiropractic analysis of any problem areas of your spine.
Chiropractic adjustments can vary greatly, but generally they involve a quick impulse in a specific direction to restore proper movement to a joint. Some methods are done using the chiropractor’s hands, a hand-held instrument, or a special device on a table. There are many ways to adjust the spine and the most appropriate method will be chosen for each patient. There are some very gentle techniques that can be used to treat infants and the elderly.
Chiropractic treatment is usually painless unless an area is inflamed, in which case treatment will be modified. Don’t worry if you hear a clicking or popping sound when one of your joints is being adjusted – this is perfectly normal. It is also normal to experience some reaction to treatment, including temporary discomfort, stiffness, or tiredness for a day or so. On the other hand, you may feel more energetic. It is important to talk to your chiropractor if you feel worried about anything during or after treatment.
The number of treatments required will depend on the seriousness of your condition, how long you have had the condition, your age, and your overall fitness level. Everyone will react differently to treatment so it is impossible to predict exactly how many treatments will be needed. Although even a single treatment can be beneficial, it generally takes a series of treatments for long-term changes to occur. Your chiropractor will be able to give a general guide to the number of treatments to expect after your initial thorough examination.
Pain is often what first brings a person into a chiropractic office, however if a condition is caught before this stage the treatment time is often greatly reduced and pain can be avoided. Conditions such as twinges, stiffness, pins and needles, headaches, poor posture and an uneven gait can indicate a possible problem within the spine. It would be wonderful if everyone had their spine checked once a year, like an MOT for your back, to catch small problems before they have a chance to become bigger problems.
Yes. Many pregnant women benefit from chiropractic care. Your body is changing rapidly, altering your centre of gravity and your gait. This in turn can put stresses on your spine and other joints. With chiropractic care these areas can be balanced, decreasing the levels of discomfort.
